Did you know that your dentist performs an oral cancer screening during your routine exams and cleanings? These inspections can be completed in minutes and have saved many people’s lives by prompting them to seek treatment from a specialist. Here’s a guide to oral cancer screenings including a few symptoms of the condition as well as how your dentist goes about detecting it.

What Is Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer is a dangerous health condition that comes in two varieties. Oral cavity cancer occurs in the foremost parts of the mouth such as the lips, teeth, gums, the floor and roof of the mouth, the front part of the tongue, and the interior of the cheeks. Cancers of the oropharynx are found in the rear of the mouth such as the throat, tonsils, and the base of the tongue. A few symptoms of oral cancer include:

  • Sores or irritation that won’t go away
  • Red or white patches forming on the tongue, gums, or the lining of the mouth
  • Tenderness, numbness, or pain in your mouth or lips
  • A thick or rough spot, lump, or crust on your oral tissues
  • Trouble chewing, speaking, swallowing, or moving your tongue or jaw
  • Changes in the way your teeth bite together
  • Looseness in your teeth or dentures
  • A sense of having something stuck in your throat
  • Hoarseness or another change in your voice.

How Does My Dentist Screen for Oral Cancer?

During a routine dental exam and cleaning, your dentist will check for oral cancer with a visual inspection and a physical examination. They will begin by visually checking for asymmetries such as swelling, bumps, lumps, sores, white or rough patches, and any other abnormalities using a small light and mirror. They may also use a tongue depressor to inspect the back of the throat. During the physical exam, your dentist will feel around the jaw, under the chin, and inside the oral cavity to search for unusual nodules or masses.

If your dentist finds anything awry, they may take a cell sample for a biopsy or refer you to a specialist for further testing. By administering oral cancer screenings and detecting issues early, dentists have saved many lives.
